Re: Advice on responding to Twitter DM

Derek Simmel

This is out of scope for OpenHPC, but the answer to the question, in my opinion, is:

"No, Bitcoin Mining is not Providing HPC Solutions. Bitcoin Mining is one specific application that could make use of HPC resources designed to accelerate it. HPC can be applied to thousands of different computational applications. "Providing HPC Solutions" implies the design, engineering and implementation of appropriate HPC systems to meet the needs of many/different computational applications. If you are only building HPC solutions for bitcoin mining, then that's what you should say."

I am not sure what the ramifications of responding are, however, from a technical point of view bitcoin mining would probably be characterized as HTC (high throughout computing), not HPC, as it is an embarrassingly parallel problem.

mopish followup from last TSC meeting: module example setup

Karl W. Schulz

Hi TSC Folks,

Following up from our most recent TSC meeting discussion, I wanted to follow up with subsequent changes for the mpich packaging in 2.x.  As we discussed, it is conceivable a site would want to have both a ucx and ofi (libfabric) variant installed at the same time for mpich.  We do not really want to change the module name exposed to the user (mpich), so that means we need to associate the underlying transport layer with the version.  Consequently, I have an updated mpich build that does this and will highlight the latest config below.

Consider a case where we want both variants installed. In that case, an admin installs two packages. After the fact, we see:

sms001:~ # rpm -qa | egrep 'mpich-(ucx|ofi)-gnu9-ohpc'
mpich-ucx-gnu9-ohpc-3.3.2-14.1.ohpc.2.0.x86_64
mpich-ofi-gnu9-ohpc-3.3.2-12.1.ohpc.2.0.x86_64

Then, and end user will see both variants demarcated with “ofi” or “ucx” in the module versions for mpich.  With no additional specification by the site admin, the ucx variant would be the default chosen by lmod:

ohpc-test@sms001:~> module avail mpich

------------------------------------ /opt/ohpc/pub/moduledeps/gnu9 ------------------------------------
   mpich/3.3.2-ofi    mpich/3.3.2-ucx (D)

  Where:
   D:  Default Module

However, we can provide addition lmod-default packages that a site can use to set ofi as the canonical default. Here is an example to choose ofi:

sms001:~ # zypper install lmod-defaults-gnu9-mpich-ofi-ohpc

This will setup a default soft link file in /opt/ohpc/pub/moduledeps/gnu9 to choose the latest UCX variant:

ohpc-test@sms001:~> module avail mpich

------------------------------------ /opt/ohpc/pub/moduledeps/gnu9 ------------------------------------
   mpich/3.3.2-ofi (D)    mpich/3.3.2-ucx

  Where:
   D:  Default Module

I have updated the MPI discussion in our recipes to reflect this example as well and to highlight that we are using ucx/ofi for the mpich and openmpi builds.  Attached is a copy of updated text for that discussion.

I believe this meets the desired requirements put forth in the last TSC meeting and will proceed forward with this approach for the RC1 release. However, if you have suggestions, comment, or can think of gotchas with this particular approach, please chime in on this thread and we can discuss further.

Thanks,

-k
