Hi all,

By happy coincidence, I'm in Germany that week. I'm planning to attend
ISC on 22 June. I already have my ticket. Please count on my
attendance. And I'm looking forward to some face to face interaction.

Booth sign-up at ISC-HPC (we need your help)

Jeff ErnstFriedman <jernstfriedman@...>

Our booth signup sheet is slowly being filled, but unfortunately we still have some empty slots, and we need your help!

We have good involvement from Board Members already (Thank you Binh and Figen!). Jeff from SUSE picked up two slots and Veronika of SGI rounds out our early adopters.  If you'll be at ISC please donate some of your time to help get the word out about this great project.

Link is below.

Booth staffing: OpenHPC

Jeff ErnstFriedman <jernstfriedman@...>

Thank you every one who filled out the some of our available slots for the ISC booth for OpenHPC. But there are still more, please look to your schedules and see if you can donate an hour or two over the course of the event. Everything and anything helps!

Some Thank yous!
Scott from Altair has signed up for 3 on Tuesday and one on Monday, and Intel is leading the charge with Karl holding things down for a full work day's worth of time split between Monday and Tuesday. Ed has two spots Wednesday.

Thank you to Jeff of SUSE, Veronika of SGI and David of LRZ

Board members are chipping in as well with Figen and Binh working side by side on Monday.

FW: [openhpc-announce] OpenHPC 1.1.1 released

Subject: [openhpc-announce] OpenHPC 1.1.1 released

OpenHPC 1.1.1 was released today on June 21, 2016

This is an update release against OHPC 1.1 that provides a small number of fixes and minor component changes. Users who previously enabled the OHPC 1.1 repository via the ohpc-release package should have immediate access to the updates available in 1.1.1 and no additional repository enablement should be necessary. Note that a number of users reported an issue when running Warewulf commands after installation related to having the BASH_ENV variable set (e.g. https://github.com/openhpc/ohpc/issues/219). The updated build in OpenHPC 1.1.1 should resolve this issue and existing 1.1 users can update their local Warewulf packages as follows (e.g. shown with yum):

$ yum upgrade warewulf-*

The compatible base OS versions for this release continue be as follows.

CentOS 7.2 (7.2.1511)
SLES12 SP1

Many thanks to everyone who reported issues and provided contributions to this release. Release notes are available at https://github.com/openhpc/ohpc/releases/tag/v1.1.1.GA

Please see the package manifest (Appendix B) included in the installation recipe documents for specific details on packaged component versions.

Feedback Questions from ISC Booth

David Brayford

Hi All,

Firstly I want to say it was great meeting some of you guys in Frankfurt last week.

Below is a list of questions and feedback I received at the ISC booth.
  • Why not fork rocks?
  • Decision process documented and published.
  • FAQs section on the website.
  • How to guides.
    • Best practice
    • Set up guides
    • System set up documentation that is not focused on expert system people (Research group "PhD students" at Postdam had problems with network infiniband configuration)
  • Will there be a section for novel and/or custom computing such as FPGA (from Postdam).

David

Draft Mission/Vision Foo

Schulz, Karl W <karl.w.schulz@...>

Dear OpenHPC TSC:

In our last meeting it was suggested that having the equivalent of a mission/vision  and/or key tenets might be useful to both help summarize the effort publicly, and provide background motivation as we continue discussing relevant conventions and the component selection process. To have some starting bullets to discuss, I wanted to send the following out before tomorrow's TSC meeting.  The first "mission" statement is pasted directly from the OpenHPC charter/participation agreement that we iterated on. The Vision/Values bullets that follow are some draft ideas.

Thanks,

-k

Mission:

  1. create a stable and flexible open source high performance computing (“HPC”) software stack, validated to run on a variety of hardware platforms;

  2. increase the simplicity and to reduce the cost of deploying and managing HPC systems and the performance and efficient utilization of HPC systems;

  3. include insights and technical contributions from across the HPC ecosystem, to integrate the leading edge work in the field and make it available to the community, and to adapt to new hardware insights and new technologies addressing scalability and performance, quickly responding to technology changes; and

  4. host the infrastructure for the open source project, establishing a neutral home for community meetings, events and collaborative discussions and providing structure around the business and technical governance of the Project.

Vision:
  • To provide a collection of pre-packaged binary components that, when combined with a supported base operating system, can be used to install and manage HPC systems throughout their lifecycle. Components should range across the entire HPC software ecosystem including provisioning, resource management, system health tools, development tools, runtimes, and userspace libraries.
  • To foster a nimble release cycle capable of supporting relevant new hardware configurations in a timely fashion
  • To provide additional distribution/integration mechanisms for leading research groups releasing open-source software
  • To support target usage for Top500 class systems, but maintain flexibility for usage on smaller systems with example installation recipes
  • To allow and promote multiple system configuration recipes that leverage community reference designs
  • To foster identification and development relevant interfaces between supported components that allows for simple component replacement and customization
Key Values:
  • component interoperability
  • system stability
  • performance scalability
  • community collaboration
  • traceability
  • transparency
  • knowledge base for configuration recipes
  • focus on user experience and convenience (for both system administrators and end-users)

Guest chair?

Jeff ErnstFriedman <jernstfriedman@...>

As of now no one has taken up Karl's offer to serve as guest chair for next week's TSC meeting on July 19. So in lieu of any additional items I will cancel the meeting, if something comes up, we can reinstate.

Thank you and talk to you in a few weeks.

Greetings Jeff – I would have been pleased to do this but am in fire fighting mode with respect to DOE Path  Forward program. I’m sure many of our colleagues may also be so involved. I will come up for air sometime mid next week but not exactly sure when.

Take care, -tron.

Jeff ErnstFriedman <jernstfriedman@...>

Dear members of the TSC at large,

As suggested at the meeting earlier this week, we are sharing a collaborative document to allow people to add their comments to the the TSC's Vision and Values. To aid with collaboration we are using a Google Doc, if you do not signin but wish to have the changes attributed to you, please finish your comments with your name so we can identify for follow up.

Anyone who is unable to - or prefers not - use this method may email their recommendations to me directly.

Please use this link below and make your suggestions inline and as comments along the side.

For your convenience I have also attached the document to this message.
